«Fomos habituados a pensar a arquitectura em função do lugar, entendendo que nele poderíamos encontrar as chaves com as quais abordar o projecto. (…) no entanto, nos últimos anos temos assistido a uma transferência significativa: todo o lugar passou a ser entendido como uma paisagem, seja natural ou artificial, e este deixou de ser esse fundo neutro sobre o qual se destacam objectos artificiais arquitectónicos, mais ou menos vocacionalmente escultóricos, para ser objecto de interesse primário, foco da atenção dos arquitectos.
Assim, modificado o ponto de vista, a paisagem perde a sua inércia e passa a ser objecto de transformações possíveis; a paisagem é o que pode projectar-se, o que se torna artificial. O projecto valida-se ao construir uma redescrição completa do lugar; que proponha, acima de tudo, a invenção de uma topografia.
Resgata-se assim, com este duplo movimento da natureza ao projecto e vice-versa, uma condição “ecomonumental” que começa a abrir caminho, inexoravelmente, acima de qualquer argumento de oportunidade, de uma forma que outros não hesitariam em chamar “espírito dos tempos” ou “vontade de uma época”.

«We have been trained to rationalize architecture, bearing in mind the place where it is to be implemented, believing that it is there that we might find the key factors as to how to approach the project. (...) Still, in the past few years we've been witness to a significant tranfer: every place has started to be seen as landscape, be it natural or artificial, and it has also ceased to be the neutral ground on which artificial architectonic objects stand out, more or less intentionally scultoresque, to be instead the object of a primordial interest, centre of the architects' attention.
Thus, with this new point of view, has the landscape lost its inertia and has started to be the object of possible transformations, the landscape is what can be projected, it is what becomes artificial. The project legitimizes itself with the construction of a revolutionary redescription of the place; which proposes, above all, the invention of some kind of topography.
It is salvaged in this manner, with this doubled sided movement of nature towards the project and vice-versa, an "ecomonumental" condition that starts taking up its own space, undisputedly, above any opportunistic argument, in a way that others would not hesitate to call "the spirit of time" or " the will of an age".»
